How to Plan a Family Camping Trip with Kids

However, the choice of campsite is crucial, as it directly determines the comfort and safety of your camping trip. The ideal campsite should be surrounded by mountains and have clear water, allowing for both scenic views and water play. It should also have open terrain, making it easy to build a fire, cook, and pitch a tent. Convenient and safe accessibility are also crucial. If you choose a campsite, access to water and sanitation facilities is ideal.

Choosing a Campsite
When planning a family camping trip, the first priority is choosing a suitable location. Choosing a campsite with beautiful natural scenery, a safe location, and comprehensive facilities ensures that you and your children can enjoy the beauty of nature while staying safe and comfortable. Different seasons and weather conditions may also influence your choice of campsite, so carefully selecting the right location is crucial to making your family camping trip even more enjoyable. Choosing a location is key to a successful family camping trip. Beautiful natural scenery and comprehensive facilities are essential.
Basic Camping Gear
So, what essential gear should we bring when camping outdoors?
  • A tent is essential for camping. However, it's important to note that some tents are only suitable for leisure time in parks. If used for overnight camping, they may not be able to withstand inclement weather, which will affect the experience.
  • A moisture-proof mat is also essential. It should be placed under the tent to protect it from moisture and fog during camping. With a moisture-proof mat, you don't have to worry about dew getting on the bottom of the tent.
  • A ground mat is equally important. It not only protects against moisture and water, but also ensures a comfortable sleeping environment for both adults and children. Although we used our child's childhood play mat on our first two camping trips, it proved too thin and hard to sleep on. Therefore, it's recommended to purchase a thick ground mat and consider bringing an air pump for easy inflation and folding. Folded ground mats take up little space, making them ideal for family use and can even serve as makeshift beds.
  • A sleeping bag and pillow are also important considerations. While a thin quilt can serve as a sleeping bag when traveling by road, if you're planning to buy a sleeping bag, it's recommended to choose a slightly thicker model. This way, even when it's hot and you don't need to get into your sleeping bag, it can still be used as a mattress.
  • A pillow is essential, ensuring a secure and comfortable sleep. Avoid using thin jackets or other clothing as pillow substitutes, as they may not provide adequate support and comfort.

Food and Drinks
When preparing your camping gear, don't forget to pack plenty of food and drinks. Staying fueled is key to a pleasant camping experience.
  • Barbecuing is a great companion to camping. Bring a variety of ingredients to suit your needs, such as marinated lamb skewers, foil-wrapped beef slices, chicken wings, root vegetable skewers, mushrooms, corn, steamed bread slices, and bread slices. Don't forget to bring a few bunches of garlic, just in case. When grilling, be sure to bring all the necessary equipment, including a grill, charcoal, various seasonings (such as salt, cumin, chili flakes, black pepper, honey, and cooking oil), two small brushes, at least three to five large grill pans, a new grill skewers, a palm-leaf fan, and gloves.
  • For dry food, steamed buns and bread are a good choice. They can be grilled and enjoyed immediately or as breakfast in the morning. For children who don't like grilling, dry food is a great alternative. Also, if you have instant noodles and a gas cooker, you can make a delicious hot breakfast. Of course, for convenience, you can also bring some instant noodles and a self-heating pot.
  • For fruit, tomatoes and cucumbers can be eaten raw or used to cook noodles. Oranges, apples, cherry tomatoes, and lychees are durable and resistant to scratches, making them ideal for carrying.
  • For snacks, you can pack some snacks like potato chips, cookies, rice crackers, and chocolate pie. These foods provide a quick source of energy when hunger strikes. Snacks like hawthorn slices and preserved plums can help quench thirst.
  • For drinks, it's recommended to bring a large bucket of drinking water to satisfy the entire family's hydration needs. You can also prepare carbonated drinks, juice, milk, yogurt, and beer. If needed, you can also bring a few bottles of wine for evening drinks. Some people even bring red and white wine, wine vessels, and goblets to add a touch of ritual to camping.
Environmental Considerations
As for clothing, since the temperature in the countryside is typically 2-3 degrees Celsius lower than in the city, it's recommended to bring a jacket to keep warm. If children enjoy playing in the water, wading shoes or extra shoes are essential.
Finally, remember to travel environmentally friendly. Minimize the use of disposable plates, chopsticks, and paper cups, and instead use reusable utensils. Also, bring trash bags and dispose of them at designated locations. Let's work together to protect the natural environment and ensure that every camping trip leaves no trace.
